Mere’s history dates back to the 12th century, when it was recorded as the home of one Robert de la Mere and earned a mention in the Domesday Book. Mere Golf Course was designed in 1934 by Open Champions James Braid and George Duncan. It was opened on May 11, 1935, to great acclaim. Membership became immediately sought after, a trend which has continued to this day. Over the years, Mere has hosted several championship tournaments, including the 2001 Dan Technology European Tour Seniors Championship.
In 1984 the club’s ownership passed to the Boler family, who instigated a series of development programmes. In 1994 £4 million was invested to create a conference and exhibition arena with three fully equipped suites and four boardrooms. With superb catering facilities and corporate golf days also available, Mere is now one of the best equipped and most renowned venues for business meetings in the North West. Wedding parties have also been attracted to Mere’s old world charm and modern facilities. The clubhouse has been extended over the years to provide a luxurious welcome for members. The leisure club is also exceptionally well appointed.
Deeply rooted in tradition, Mere Golf & Country Club continues to branch out into new and exciting ventures for the benefit of its members, guests and the business community.
